My Valentine to Kellie Rasberry

MTM Me and Kellie
Kellie Rasberry is the most famous person I know, a personality on the nationally syndicated Kidd Kraddick in the Morning Show. Even though we grew up in the same church, graduated from the same Christian school, and have degrees from the same *cough* university, I still don’t know her well. But, we do have a shared history of sorts, enough for me to cheer for the success she has found in her life.

Kellie agreed to have dinner with MTM and me while we were in Dallas. I think she was charmed by MTM, but, what girl wouldn’t be? On the other hand, I think I spent far too much time worrying about being genuine and probably just came across as stiff and fake. I guess that’s because I always looked up to Kellie when I was growing up. Being the same age as her younger brother made me automatically uncool, and that’s perfectly understandable.

Kellie was more accepting than I was. She did invite me to a party when I was in ninth grade. I remember being giddy because I was included with that group, because a boy I had a desperate crush on was going to be there.

And, that boy talked to me the whole time. Kellie’s party turned me into a boy charmer, infusing a confidence in me that I didn’t have on my own back then. Or, maybe her invitation did that for me. Either way, the boy in question was riveted by me, and I was ceaselessly grateful to her.

At some point, everyone cleared out of the house and ran into the woods with paper bags in tow. I started to follow on something called a ‘snipe hunt,’ thinking it would be another fun Kellie activity that I needed to know about because she thought it was cool. I stood at the edge of the woods, hearing catcalls and laughter and screaming, missing out on all the fun. I turned to that boy and begged him to take me snipe hunting, too.

Whatever it was.

He smiled and said, “Andra, they’re just using the snipe hunting thing as an excuse to go into the woods and make out.”

!

And, just like that, my evening was ruined. Why didn’t the boy want to take me ‘snipe hunting?’ Was I somehow not ‘snipe’ material? Not ‘snipe worthy?’

I know someone who is ‘snipe worthy,’ and that person is Kellie. She is a strong woman who can hold her own with anyone, and that means weak, pathetic dudes need not apply. Or dudes who are selfish. Or dudes who can’t handle being in her aura. (And, I realize that excludes a lot of dudes. But still.)

If you are a guy who is sure of who he is; who can hold his own in a conversation; who possesses quiet strength; and who knows how to have a blast in all forms of public places, go up to Kellie the next time you see her and ask her to go snipe hunting.

She just might say yes. After all, it’s the deep guys who get my blog. *Wink. Wink.*

Happy Valentine’s Day!

  1. Oh my!! an open invitation to go snipe hunting…the only time I ever heard about snipe hunting was at church camp when I was about 10 or 11 years old. It turned out to just be a way to trick kids into hunting for something in the woods that didn’t exist. Sorta like playing hide and seek and when the person closes their eyes and counts to 50, you all sneak away to someone else’s house.

When we were 12 or 13, the dance parties in the basements were the make-out opportunities, dance and kiss, dance and kiss…what a life! 🙂

As for the *wink, wink* to the deep guys, must be another snipe joke being perpetrated on us “other” guys.

    1. I’m sure you never did anything like that, Lou. Running off and leaving people is a brand of rude I can’t fathom for you.

      Great basement reference……

And, of course I’m referring to you.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you and TK!

      1. usually ran off and left my younger brother hiding and seeking with no one to find, now that was fun.

Hope your flight is better than the start on the tarmac.

Happy Valentine’s To youse guys (pronounce as Jersey Shore)

        1. Meanie. Your poor brother. But, I bet you never broke your brother’s arm. Bwhahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!

          🙂

      2. True, I never broke his arm although we wrestled a lot when we were young and I did put a hurt on him occasionally.

  2. So, if we assume we are those guys then we are being cocky. If we don’t assume dear Andra is referring to us then we are unworthy wimps! A Valentine’s Day trick!

Sounds like MTM is a lucky guy though and got to had dinner with too fantastic ladies. Well played MTM!

And happy Valentine’s Day too all … especially Andra.

    1. There’s no trick here, Carnell. All readers of my blog are deep. 🙂

I hope you and Nancy have most excellent V Day plans.

  3. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and MTM

Kellie sounds cool. I’ve never heard of snipe hunting before. Interesting.

    1. I think this usage is Southern. MTM had heard of it used to mean wild goose chase up in Wisconsin.

Hope you and Pat have a lovely Valentine’s Day.

      1. We have it up North here in Idaho also. My cousins attempted to take me on a snipe hunt once….they couldn’t get away from me, I was too fast and stuck like glue to them. He He He.

        1. Idaho is a place I still want to visit, Lori. If I could avoid the bears, I probably wouldn’t mind snipe hunting. Bravo to you for not getting left behind.

          Enjoy your Valentine’s Day!!

  4. I’m just so glad high school is over. I was a dork and I still am, but now I don’t mind 🙂

    Happy Valentine’s day Andra!

    1. Obviously, I was a dork, too, but I think that’s pretty awesome company. I hope you are busy busy today. Don’t laugh, but MTM and I gave each other the same Dodeline card for today. 🙂

  5. Happy V Day to you and MTM. I hope you have wonderful plans today. Bill and I started celebrating yesterday, but of course when you are with the one that is the best of all, you don’t need V day to share the love! That’s an everyday occurrence.

In the 6th grade, my feelings were deeply hurt b/c I was not asked to a boy/girl birthday party where the participants (so I was told) played “Spin the bottle.” Yes, in Anderson, SC, I heard ppl talk about going “snipe hunting” and knew that it was a ruse.

Now that you have a license to kiss, hug and do all the fun things that married people do, maybe you ought to try to lure MTM into the woods to go “snipe hunting.”

    1. I think I should play spin the bottle with MTM. I have never played it in all my life. Isn’t that sheltered?

I hope you and Bill have a lovely day of love!

      1. Never played Spin the bottle??!! Oh MY, what a sheltered life, we did that at recess and usually in home room if we could get away with it. I think I must have grown up with a bunch of cwazzy people. 🙂

      2. I never spin the bottle, I just tip it up and let the love flow down!

      3. Glad I could make you happy! Just picture my in a little cupid costume shooting arrows of love and happiness!

Actually, that’s not bad. That gives me an idea for a new outfit!!

      4. I never played spin the bottle either, nothing weird about that I don’t think

  6. So, so happy you had fun with Kellie. She is so gracious and fun! Kellie and I pretty much spent all of our weekends together in high school and even after, until she moved. My favorite memories of those years ALWAYS included Kellie. She stood up for me, cried with me and shared my deepest secrets. We’ve laughed together and watched way too many beauty pagents and movies together. We’ve shared way too much buttered popcorn and boiled peanuts! We try to keep up with each other and talk at least a couple of times a month or so. There should be more Kellie’s in this world to make us all smile! I know that Kellie was so flattered to have you and MTM go to dinner with her. We (you, Leigh Anne and I) should plan a trip out to TX to shop, eat and maybe a concert! (Kellie took me to a Duran Duran concert and we got to go backstage! We squealed like teenagers!)

    Anyway, I’m rambling and I digress…..

    Happy Valentine’s Day! XO, TJ

    1. It was really fun to hang out with her. I am happy that she is doing so well and she is so down to earth. It was also fun to meet some of her friends.

I think it is awesome that you and Kellie have been friends for most of your lives. Having someone to talk shorthand with, who just gets you, is such a gift of life.

And yes, I’d love to do that trip!

Happy Heart Day to you and your family. Xo

  7. I can relate to “trying” to be authentic and feeling like I came across the opposite.

She sounds like a person I would love to know. And I’m a chicken… I would have been terrified to go snipe hunting. I probably would have been relieved if he said that to me. 🙂

    1. My ways of seeing the world back then were somewhat warped. I would’ve ended up being a chicken when I got there. 🙂

Hope you have had a fabulous heart day.

  8. I had FORGOTTEN about snipe hunting until I read this but for those who grew up in the South, and before they knew better, this was a legit thing to do! Made the ones who did not know what was going on feel like fools but heck, who has not felt like a fool at some point in their life?

    1. And I didn’t even get to try it.

MTM did this when he was in Boy Scouts growing up in Wisconsin.

      …………

That didn’t sound right, did it?

Happy Hearts to you and Steve.

  9. Andra,
I lived right down the street from Ryan and Kellie…I remember thinking at Kellie always had it going on…She was always friendly and nice, even though she was older. It’s only been a couple of months since I found out what Kelly did for a living…that has to be an awesome job!!!

    1. I forgot you lived in their neighborhood growing up. Several of our classmates lived there, didn’t they?

I think Kellie is awesome at her job, and I’m very proud to know her.

  10. You always seem to have such fabulous parties and friends. I am so jealous! Although I will admit to getting my fair share of roses today. (Don’t tell, but they were from quite a few different men!)

I can’t say as I have ever been out snipe hunting, but that doesn’t mean i haven’t found a few boys in the bushes.

Here is hoping that you and your sweetie have the greatest of sweet days, and enjoy some chocolate! XXX OOO

    1. I hope you found a boy or two, Miss May. I love hearing from you. Happy V Day!!

  11. Yeah, I remember snipe hunting as a type of joke thing as well, luckily I never fell for it, although perhaps the whole time it was for making out and that’s why I never went out to the woods!

As for Kellie, you got to find me one a bit closer to home, I can’t be traipsing halfway across the US AGAIN for some woman. I mean, how many times can you fall for that snipe hunt?!

    [ K ]

    1. Aw. For shame, Kenny. She would probably find you to be very funny.
