So Dad Will Be On StoryCorps….

I am squeezing my legs together and trying not to wet my pants. On November 17, my Dad and I will be filling one of the highly-coveted-zombie-killing-in-the-streets slots in Charleston’s StoryCorps.

If you’re not familiar with StoryCorps, it is THE quintessentially American project. The project started in 2003, and they travel around the country recording American stories. From people. By people, In their own words.

And, Dad is going to come to Charleston, walk into their motorized recording booth, and tell his story. Or, one of his stories. Heck, he may charm the StoryCorps people into taking over a whole afternoon.

Here’s more about StoryCorps, in case it comes to your neck of the planet.

If you have a story from this blog that you’d like to hear Dad tell, please leave your requests in a comment. We’ll have forty minutes, so he may need more than one. That you like to read about him through this blog is one of his Constant Crowing Moments. If we have time, I know he’d try to comply.

  1. Exciting! Go ahead and pee your pants, missy. Some occasions call for it!

    • More occasions than usual these days…….since those things are harder to control than they used to be. Oopsie…….

  2. HE’S DOING IT!!!!! HURRAY. I’M SO BLOODY EXCITED. They came to Montgomery, and I tried to get Scott to do it with me, but he wouldn’t.

    • I think he’s really nervous about it, but I am steamrolling my way through……….I swear, if I have to drive up there and get him holding a water pistol to his head, he’s going to be there.

  4. Story Corps folks will certainly want to listen all day to his stories. Heck, he should be raconteur of the year!

    • He gets really nervous when he’s recorded or filmed, though. I’m afraid we will get in there, and he won’t talk at all.

  5. This is FABULOUS! I can’t wait to hear him. How did you persuade him to do it?
    Hugs,
    Kathy

    • He won’t be persuaded until he actually shows up, but I’ve tried to express how much it will mean to me……

  6. The accidental weak bladder? The accidental potty mamma?

I want to hear him tell the one where he cussed at his father. Now that would be good! Or the one about the dog who ate the counterfeit dollar bill – so couldn’t pass it. :)

    • He didn’t tell the one where he cursed his father. My uncle told that one, and I don’t think I will EVER get Dad to tell that one. I could tell it as “My Favorite Dad Story Ever.”……..we both get airtime………

      November 1, 2012
      • Can we get to see his reaction after you tell it?

        November 1, 2012
      • That would mean video-ing somewhere………

You could always just let me wear a recorder while in Starbucks one morning! The girls and I saw him there yesterday! He was telling me again about the trip to TN and the incline! “I paid $42 for us to go on that thang! Did you girls ever do that? Huh”. So funny! Love him AND his stories! Tomi Jean

    • You should TOTALLY do that. Just whip out your phone and put it on the table, and he would NEVER KNOW.

I talked to him last night, and he told me he saw you. I’m glad he has so many people who love him.

I have always thought that you and Roy would make a perfect storycorp piece. Anything you two come up with will be a surprise and a delight.

  12. I’m soooooo jealous. I love Story Corp. I can’t wait to hear your father’s story. I also love the Facundo story. Fac-king fabulous.

    November 1, 2012
    • Don’t be jealous. By the end, it may be a train wreck…… :)

      • Thanks to you I found an excellent distraction for my sleep deprived brain yesterday. I kept watching StoryCorps cartoons. Some made me sob, but that was good.

  13. Fingers crossed that it’s a great experience for both of you . . . then he’ll be in the Library of Congress and you’ll have a copy to take home.

    November 2, 2012
    • We’ll both be in it, because I’ll probably have to do my usual routine of goading him.

  14. I totally know StoryCorps! I will have to think a bit to make a suggestion. He is just so charming…any story he tells is gold! :-)

  15. I’ve just noticed that this is happening on radio in the UK. It’s a cool idea. Hope your Dad tells a great tale.

    November 2, 2012
    • They may use them on the radio here, Roger. I think some of them go on This American Life.

      November 2, 2012
  16. Does Storycorps broadcast, or have a bank of recorded stories? I would so like to hear the result…

    November 3, 2012
    • I will let you know, Kate, though most people will never be able to understand him live. :) But, if one can tune in, I will post a link.
