A Phone Booth Where You Need One

To read the first installment in the Open Mouth Series, click here. Otherwise, this post won’t make sense. Besides, it’s yet another photo of me with my mouth open.

That girl, she almost did a number on herself when she saw that grizzly bear scat. She slipped and skidded and cursed and screamed all the way down a very big hill. Over rocks. Under low-hanging branches. Through tight spots.

She only fell. Once.

Torn and bloody, she staggered onto the rocky shore of an alpine lake. At one end, a glacier calved into ice water. She stood at the other end, breathing. The scent of Christmas filled her lungs, and she drank it in.

Until she realized, she wasn’t breathing alone.

When she whipped around, two big eyes watched her from a height. They moved closer, attached to hair and skin and fangs and……

Did you call that place in Juneau? We need to make that call before we get on the boat.

She blinked. Why was that big grizzly bear speaking? To her?

Dollar signs shot through her eyes right before she caterwauled in fright, before she blinked again and realized the Bear Sasquatch Creature was really the love of her life.

Imagination. It’s really everything.

Just let me zip into this phone booth over here. I’ll make that call right now.

    • Get out the carols, Kate. Do they already have decorations out in England? Here, they are everywhere, and it always makes me a little ill.

  2. I’m just going along with the flow of your story. Very unclear where I’m going but enjoying the ride.

    • MTM said it was unclear last night as well. Part of the challenge if writing to fit the photo……

  5. Has Christmas music commenced yet in the Watkins / MTM household? And you truly must have a vivid imagination. Did MTM have a beard at that time? Perhaps he was more wolfman than bear? ;-)

    • MTM does not allow the music yet, though I did sneak in some Sting “If On a Winter’s Night” the other day. :)

When MTM grows much stubble, it is red…….which can look very bear-like.

Just like in a fairy tale – the bear was always a prince under a spell. there was no mention of scat in those stories, or phone booths…guess thats why this one made me smile.

    • Maybe I can keep these clean enough for Cayleigh to read…….except for yesterday……..but maybe that will go over her head.

  9. Haha…did I tell you about the time my nephew was boning out his sheep (he was in Alaska hunting by himself – long story) and he felt the hair raise up on his neck? Slowly turned around to a Kodiak Sow with her mouth open. He shot around her, she didn’t move, he threw the leg that he hadn’t quite boned out (he’s already stuffed everything in his backpack), and slowly backed away. He then had to hike five miles with a bloody pack back to the spot where the airplane was to pick him up…and wait for the plane…yikers.

    I love your writing.

    • Lori, that would be my worst nightmare. Not that I would go hunting in Alaska, but I really, REALLY want to go hiking in Denali someday, and I know there are bears everywhere. I wouldn’t have the presence of mind to get away like your nephew did.

We hiked in Glacier several years ago and bought the bear spray. I looked at all the instructions for operating that thing and thought, “I might as well die.”

    • I may carry this all the way through next week and make new wacky photos on our trip. I stopped doing these a couple of years ago, and I miss them. :)

  14. Very cool picture, Andra. I’m enjoying your series and learning a bit more about bear tracks and scat and all that “stuff” from your previous post.

    • I don’t know where this one is going, but the pictures are dictating the whole thing.
