People let us down. I’ve let people down. It’s a predictable cycle. Most people do their best, but we never know what others may expect from what they give us.

It’s best to expect nothing.

Except from myself. I’ve shortchanged myself more than anyone. By telling myself I’m not good enough. Through discounting my accomplishments. In believing others when they practically say I should give up.

I wonder what caused Aunt Polly to keep this message. It was to her old people, whoever they were. It was her handwriting that reached out and strangled me from the paper. Hope you find it inspiring.

Like I was meant to find it.

Right now.

The Man in the Glass
Author Unknown

When you get what you want in your struggle for self

And the world makes you king for a day,

Just go to a mirror and look at yourself

And see what that man has to say.

For it isn’t your father or mother or wife

Whose judgment upon you must pass,

The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life

Is the one staring back from the glass.

Some people might think you’re a straight-shootin’ chum

And call you a wonderful guy.

But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum

If you can’t look him straight in the eye.

He’s the fellow to please, never mind all the rest.

For he’s with you clear to the end

And you’ve passed your most dangerous test.

If the guy in the glass is your friend

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years

And get pats on the back as you pass.

But your final reward will be heartache and tears

If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.

I will be without internet access from today through next Thursday. I will not be able to visit blogs, respond to comments or email, or interact in social media. Please know that I will catch up next week. I miss you when I’m not here.

Also, apologies for some issues with this post (went out early, then didn’t go out via e.mail, so I needed to redo it again….)

  1. I like that poem…it’s a hard truth to follow..I mean you know..looking in the mirror test. Because ultimately no matter what reasons we give we really do need to answer to ourselves.

Wow. Yes, this “man” in the mirror doesn’t like what she sees, but I’m either too lazy, or don’t care enough, to change myself. Sometimes I believe there’s no winning with the man in the mirror. Hope all is well and you’re doing something FUN!

  12. Ah so true…so true… I spent years trying to make everyone else happy. Only to one day see myself in a photo and go “who is that person?? She looks so unhappy.” Now, I constantly seek my approval and no one elses. See you when you get back :)

  13. Yes, there was a lot of frustration in tracking down this post. One kept getting an ‘Oops’ message!
It is very true what that rhyme puts across. Unless, of course, one is such a lousy judge of character one thinks one has a good one when one doesn’t!

  14. Once we accept that our reputations vary from person to person, and even day-to-day (depending upon the topic under discussion), we stop getting so caught up in the opinions of others which tend to be based more on who they are than on who we are.

Instead, we strive to do our best while remaining focused on the reputation that matters most: The one we have with the “man in the mirror.”

    Enjoy your time awa’
