WordPress Is Killing Me

It's late. I've been writing all day. With a migraine.

It’s late.

I’ve been writing all day.

With a migraine.

And I show up at almost 11pm to a completely altered WordPress posting platform.

My head just exploded.

So, I’m going to leave you with a little Lewis and Clark trivia and head to bed.

Tomorrow is another day, Scarlett.

TODAY’S MERIWETHER LEWIS BIRTHDAY MONTH TRIVIA QUESTION:

FROM WHAT CITY DID LEWIS AND CLARK DEPART FOR THEIR WESTERN EXPEDITION?

Answer to yesterday’s Meriwether Lewis Birthday Month Trivia Question: WHO WOULD’VE BEEN MORE PROFICIENT WITH COMPUTERS? LEWIS? OR CLARK? WHY?

ANSWER: Most definitely Lewis. He was the more scientific person of the two. The more methodical. He was definitely the geek.

  1. Still say you should compose off-line, in Word or something, then copy to your blog. Oh, and run your own installation. But you don’t want to hear any of that from me. Especially while you have a migraine (sorry!).

So, I will just guess Charleston, since that is where they should have left from, and leave it at that.

    1. I’ve tried and tried. The reformatting drives me mad.

I know my days on WP.com are numbered. What’s hard is I know (mostly) how to take my site to .org, but I don’t have the best sense of the slick marketing messages it needs to reach a wider audience, and I don’t have the thousands of dollars people want to charge to give me that, even with no guarantee it will work.

To my knowledge, Lewis never set foot in Charleston. Had he continued on his planned route to DC through New Orleans, he certainly would’ve, as Charleston was a popular port for stopping.

      1. I think it’s better if you use a really basic word processor, not Word. Just something like Notepad or Wordpad which come with windows. Then they don’t have the formatting that Word adds and can copy/paste more easily.

I hate it when they totally change how things work with no warning, no consultation or anything. Why can’t they understand that most people actually prefer things they have got used to simply to be left alone and not messed with! Not just WP but everything, Farcebook being one of the worst offenders. At least with an operating system you can keep using the old one until absolutely forced to change, but things online just suddenly change. I wouldn’t be sure .org would be safe from that?

      2. Just had a look and it is here too (sometimes they take time to spread) seriously not happy! I just two days set up a friend with her new blog and showed her how to use it – better go warn her it’s changed 🙁

And then I’ll have to go complain to WP and be ignored again 🙁 🙁

      3. People have talked about it – but I wish there was a way to integrate Scrivener with your site so you could write your posts, and track them, in Scrivener and then sync them up to WP.

  2. I’m sorry Andra. Those are never fun. Get better.

    1. What’s bonkers about me (well, there are many things……….) is I don’t take migraine meds. I’ve never found one that didn’t make me feel spaced out and weird. Excedrin Migraine has to do it for me.

      1. Have you tried Maxalt? It’s not a traditional pain killer – it addresses the migraine without making you stupid, like Fiorinol, say. It’s a melt-under-your-tongue thing – prescription. I found it worked well for me. Mine have GREATLY reduced in the last 10 years – right around the time I got my laser eye surgery (makes me think the two are linked), so I don’t take the prescription stuff anymore either. For the odd occasion a Defcon 5 variety migraine hits, I reach for a cocktail of OTC drugs to try to deal with it.

          1. I would assume so. It’s made by Merck. I think the chemical name is Rizotriptan Benzoate.

  3. I haven’t blogged in a few weeks, so thanks for the update. (I actually did check out the new platform, and *I LIKE IT*. Sorry.)

    1. It is cleaner and more Tumblr-like. I think I just didn’t expect it, and the change threw me over the edge with my headache. The only thing that drives me crazy about it now is the beepbeepboop thing.

      1. I had the sound off so I missed the good times.

      2. WordPress has kicked my butt two days in a row, so I concede that there is an issue here.

  4. Indeed — what’s up WordPress?
Sorry about your migraine. If you get this message, what seems to help for me is the low-cal Monster energy drinks… the lemonade ones…. something about the taurine and the electrolytes helps my headaches.
    Feel better.

    1. I think I may just pack my butt up and drive into town for an excellent latte. The barista will probably look at me like I’m a kook, because my left eye is shot red today. Remnants of this thing. Sigh.

      1. Does the barista have a name? Oooh… if you do go, channel your inner dilettante and make your own adventure involving the barista. AND WRITE IT DOWN!

  5. I haven’t noticed anything different on WordPress – maybe it just means you are special.

    Hope your migraine subsides soon

    1. The posting platform changed for me last night. It really is less complicated, but change is harder to process when I don’t feel well.

  6. Sometimes WordPress is frustrating. They change things once in a while without telling us peons.

Try slamming a Pepsi (caffeine) and breathing fresh outside air when the darn migraines start. Might help get you through the night.

    1. I slept four hours last night. 🙂 I mostly feel hungover today. Dull ache versus pounding pain. (No, I haven’t had anything to drink.)

  7. Yesterday it was a “betrayal” and today a migraine; then, to top that off, a recalcitrant blogging platform….. There must be days when you simply want to chuck the entire process, but I, for one, am so happy you have not! Feel better soon.

    Oh, the starting point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JARDvdrAxk

    1. The “betrayal” has been going on for a while now. I just haven’t written about it, because I don’t know how. I was actually trying to come up with a way to write about it this morning, because it might give me clarity or make me feel better, but I’ve already spent too much time letting that situation steal my joy.

I get migraines pretty often. I’m not surprised I got one this week, given the stress paragraph 1 above has caused me.

  8. I have to go to my Dashboard and “posts” in order to have the usual platform. If I go to Posts instead of Dashboard and try to start a new post, I get this “beep, beep, boop” thing pop up and the platform looks totally different. I think they were still working on it when it first came up for me because I didn’t have all of the options that I usually do when writing. I don’t know if that’s what you are talking about, but I sure hope your migraine has gone away and you feel better today.

    1. That’s exactly what I got, Mary. And it kept changing as I was writing, like they were adding features live. Drove me crazy, and my post didn’t go out when I scheduled it this morning. I think poor MTM saved me and put it up.

      1. Go to your Dashboard and to posts on the sidebar menu. That’s how I’ve been getting to the platform…the one that I am used to. It will save you from another headache.

        1. I don’t know how I didn’t get to that last night. That’s where I usually go to write a new post. I guess that shows how off in the head I was. Ha.

  9. I hope you’re feeling better. Bobina gets migraines and I know how hard they can be.

I’ve been sick of wordpress for a while, it’s been over 3 years. As soon as we can get the teenager into college at the end of the month and figure out the family budget, I’m going to pour some money into my own hosting site and bid adieu to wp.

    1. Will you combine your different platforms on one system? Or will you keep them separate? I seem to remember reading that you were advised to keep the separate.

      1. Lefty Pop is already it’s own deal…My Blog Can Beat Up Your Blog will be as well.

  10. Forget the platform. Go to your dashboard and hit posts and then add new. The other one can’t suck enough. No warning as well

  11. Oh yes… I’ve just noticed the new platform, Andra. What’s all the ‘beep beep beep’ about? (I hope you got that as well, otherwise I may think I’m cracking up!) I use Windows Live Writer for my posts, and if you hadn’t mentioned it I’d probably have never noticed!

    Hope your migraine’s cleared now!

  12. I agree with Railroad man. Write your post outside of WP and then import it to WP. Writing it in wordpad or as a text message will help with the formatting issues. *I think* 🙂 Hope you feel better soon.

  13. Odd. I get the old WP format, but if I go to edit something, then it’s FUTURE TIME (beep, boop, beep? Um.. Okaaaay?). Hmmm. I guess it’s simpler, but I could do without the R2D2 stuff…

  14. i have gone to doing exactly what bikerchick has done. i have to go to dashboard and then posts and it is my old comfortable format for posting. i went crazy the first day the other one showed up! hope you are feeling better today, andra

    1. p.s. I’m sorry about your headache… that really sucks.

  15. I hate the new platform. It never did post my post about my son’s new car on Facebook. Sigh. Why do they have to change things?!

  16. I hope this reply isn’t too late. My grandma gave me a book on the two explorers. I believe it was New Orleans and they followed the Mississippi up and then crossed the Rockies with their guide Sacajawea. Right? Yes? Fingers crossed… I did not google that!!

  17. Migraines suck. 🙁 Feel better.

  18. Horrid things, migraines. I hope it buggered off without ceremony by today, so you could have a decent day. All the best.

  19. So sorry, Andra, I have had that happen, and if you knew how technically challenged I am, your migraine would be even worse. After my last horrible experience I started always posting from the left hand side where it says posts. The other way wants to kill me.

  20. I like the look of that interface, but I’m not completely happy with the feature set yet, so I’ve been switching to the classic mode until they work in the same level of functionality.
