Why Authors LOVE Book Clubs

Authors LOVE book clubs. I was fortunate to be invited to a Tigard, OR book club last night. They selected my memoir Not Without My Father as their March read. I was tickled they invited me to their discussion. Authors never know what to expect when reading groups invite us. Will we be roasted on a spit? Read on.

Authors LOVE book clubs.

And I was fortunate to be invited to a Tigard, OR book club last night. They selected my memoir Not Without My Father as their March read. I was tickled they invited me to their discussion.

Authors never know what to expect when reading groups invite us.

Once, I showed up at a group where not one person had read any book. I gave a charming sales pitch, though. Scads of ladies walked out with fists full of my books.

Another time, someone went into a lengthy diatribe about how much she hated the book. It was an uncomfortable situation for everyone. I *think* I turned it into a positive, though.

I asked her, “When did you read it?”

“Over a month ago!” She fumed.

“And you’re still this worked up about it?”

“Yes! I hated it!”

“And when was the last time you were this worked up about a book a month after you read it?”

She paused. “I don’t remember.”

“I guess that’s the sign of a good book.”

She actually agreed with me.

I’ve given my formal presentation for book clubs who’d like to be entertained by an author. I’ve sipped wine and answered questions with blunt candor about the challenges of selling books in 2018. Readers always get the inside scoop, from bloopers that didn’t make a book to the crazy backstories that formed the various plots.

Whatever book clubs seek, I aim to please.

Many thanks to the ladies in Tigard for selecting Not Without My Father and for hosting me for a rousting discussion. I loved being with you!

  1. My book group is pretty nice – and they all love you!
Having been in the same book group for 30 years, it has been my observation that when members start griping about not liking the book, the ending, the characters, etc. I always know it is going to be a good discussion – and it does! Your response to the book hater is priceless!
