I live in Charleston, SC. Last Wednesday, nine people were massacred in my city. More people survived who will never, ever be the same. Families woke up last Wednesday whole. Now they’re not.
NO OPINION I HAVE IS GOING TO CHANGE THAT.
Rather than give another set of opinions about what happened or how to fix my city, I’ve compiled a comprehensive list of ways you can help the families of the Charleston shooting victims, concrete things you can actually DO to make a difference for the people of Charleston.

Wow. Thank you, Andra, for this very practical and thoughtful post. Will forward!!!
Thank you, Linda. I’ll update it as additional things come online in an effort to keep everything in one place.
When I shared your post on Facebook, a friend shared it on her timeline too. So word is getting around!
Our Pastr, Bro Jamie Broom, gave a sermon today at Immanuel Baptist Church about your communitiy’s grief, about the prejudice and labels he grew up with. He is my age, around 60. He challenged our congregation to examine our hearts to see where we stand as individuals and as a congregation of believers about labels we uee to define anyone we view as different than ourselves, and the lessons Christ taught about acceptance and shared faith. We are predominately a white church, although we have some black, oriental, and Russian members. We have developed a relatiomship with a black sister church in town who we partner with for VBS, Man Up, and other programs. Bro. Jamie went to their pastor and started dialog immediately after the shooting there to confess his personal family of origion attitudes on race issues among other prejudices, and shared with us their discussion as well as scriptures including the damnation of name-callers including the label of fool. Personally, my heart is with those who grieve personal loss as well as those who grieve for society as a whole for this loss based on something as superficial as a different skin color. May God continue to sustain your congregation and city as you continue to be an example of His love and forgiveness. I pray for you and myself that I may continue to demonstrate ” Christ in us”. Thank you all for the strength and forgiveness as well as all Christian attributes you as a community have demonstrated to me, our Church, and this nation. May God bless you all and sustain you in your grief, and support you as rand as you show all of Christ’s children how to conduct ourselves with the Disney, humility and faith He instructed us all to live by. Thank you for showing us all that it can be done.
On it. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing.
I adore you. You are an amazing person.
Just trying to do my part to help people remember the victims and reach out to those left behind.
Shared on my FB page. Thanks for the list, I was feeling very far away but wanted to reach out. This will help.
Thanks for sharing, Lisa. I need to text you on a different matter. Maybe I can see you sooner than we thought. 🙂
I’ll continue to update this page as additional information is released. People can donate by mail, PayPal, credit card and text, bringing things closer, I hope.
I can’t wait to hear your news and plans. 🙂
I can’t thank you enough for this incredibly meaningful list of links. I can promise right now that I’m going to do something related to the library. I immediately thought of you and wondered of your possible connection to Cynthia Hurd. And it doesn’t take long to express condolences to the families, which seems like a very small thing to do, but perhaps very important. Bless you for your efforts, dear friend. This has to be a very trying time. ox
I hope it will become an online list of resources that will help people do everything in one place. Thanks for thinking of the library. I know it will mean a lot to them and to Ms. Hurd’s family.
thank you for posting this. our thoughts are with all of you –
Thanks, Beth.
A very positive way to let folks know how they can help. Thanks.
You’re welcome, John. Thanks for reading.
I hope you are holding up over there. I hope that horrible dark cloud over your Charleston lifts soon. xo
We’re okay. The dark cloud may never lift for some. I hope this post inspires people to reach out and do meaningful things for these families.
I’m saddened for Charleston and for the families of those killed. I do think that Charleston has handled it with dignity and grace, showing the strength of a town coming together in tragedy. Thank you for the resources we can use to honor those taken too soon. My boys and I will be looking to donate to the library. Thinking of you and sending hugs.
Heather, thank you. Please come back and let us know what books you and your boys choose to donate.
Gosh, Andra, this is REALLY helpful information! It feels strange to be so far from home when something like this happens. Thanks for the links, address, etc.
Just so you know. This summer I’m going on two-month RV trip with my nearing-ninety Godmother and her cat Pepe le Mew. I leave for the US in a week. The RV is huge, 37-feet. My Godmother will be driving and towing an SUV the entire way. She was a Flamenco dancer during her entire professional life. I’m going to try to blog about our trip and write a book about the 64 beautiful years she and my Godfather, a Venezuelan movie star (I kid you not!), were married, until Raul died last fall one month shy of his 97th birthday.
Hope you are well. Sorry to have been away so long!
Hugs from Ecuador,
Kathy
This is awesome Make a Memory news!!! I hope you’ll post a lot about this experience, Kathy. I want to hear all about it. And if you’re coming anywhere near Charleston, please let me know. I’ll come meet you. A flamenco dancer married to a Venezuelan movie star. You’re right. You’ve GOT to write a book about this.
We still hope to get to Ecuador. Logistics from Charleston are a challenge, but we both very much want to do it while you and Sara are there.
