Day ThirtyTwo: Brain Doritos

A residency Saturday. I don't always use them for brain doritos, but on my next-to-last Saturday, I wanted to waste a few hours. Here's what I did.

Daily Word Count: 2,990
Cumulative Words Written: 54,843
Total Words Discarded: 14,500
Total Chapters Drafted: 23
Time Spent Writing Today: 5 hours

A residency Saturday. I don’t always use them for brain doritos, but on my next-to-last Saturday, I wanted to check out for a few hours.

Brain Doritos = mindless reading, usually trash magazines, erotic romances, and other things requiring no thought.

I caught up on back issues of the Sunday Styles section of the NY Times first. Then I settled in bed, downloaded the latest novel by the dear Jacqueline Francis, and read for three hours. (Get Returning His Love HERE.)

Sarah, Tone and I drove to Aljustrel, the closest proper town, for a massive helping of Portuguese seafood and rice. It’s basically seafood paella with more liquid, but don’t call it that. The Portuguese get very offended when one compares their cuisine with Spain.

After a leisurely meal, I ferried us across the twilit countryside, the first time I drove in Portugal at night. EEK! It’s freaking DARK here at night!

I’m back at my desk, belly full and wide awake. Before I sleep, I think I’ll make more word babies.

Downtime, stepping back, in creating and in life, alters our eye, doesn’t it?

I always see my work differently after taking time off. Even though my time is waning, I still want to listen to my soul, give it what it needs.

It also helps that Sarah’s reading my memoir. So if someone happens by her at the pool, MY BOOK IS THE ONE PEOPLE SEE! In Portugal.

How cool is that?!?

  1. I saw a dog-eared copy of my short story book the other day in a local coffee shop; made me happy.
