This week, I’m in the swampiest swamp in the universe: Washington DC.
Best thing so far? Other than running out of Not Without My Father due to breathless demand?
Word-of-mouth.
People showed up for a Tuesday event excited. “We were at this thing on Saturday. Several people from Dupont Circle came up to us carrying on about you.”
Here’s what they said.
“You’re having Andra Watkins speak this week! SHE IS AMAZING! YOU WILL LOVE LOVE LOVE HER!”
Dupont Circle folks are especially UN-SWAMPY. And incredibly astute. I’m honored to be in the swamp.
I’ve met some stellar folks with cool stories.
Mojisola Edu is a veteran and survivor of PTSD. I am honored she stayed behind after my Tuesday morning performance to tell me her story. One of the things I love most about my job is meeting badass women. They feed my soul.
In my travels, I’ve been lucky to meet numerous descendants of Meriwether Lewis’ family. Ted Gregory of Frederick, MD is the latest. His Lewis ancestor settled in North Carolina. He was grateful to me for making his multiple-greats-uncle heroic.
UPCOMING EVENTS
21 – 25 October 20-19 – San Diego
28 October – 1 November 2019 – Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey
5 November 2019 – Beaufort, South Carolina
13 – 15 November 2019 – Greensboro Tri-Cities North Carolina
Including keynote speaker at Greensboro NC Garden Club!
WHAT I’M READING
Two trips in two weeks leaves me little reading time. This particular story, and Obreht’s writing in general, require immersion. I don’t feel like I’m doing this tale justice and may set it aside for my next vacation. Not because I think it isn’t well done. On the contrary. I don’t want to miss anything.
BEST THING I READ ONLINE THIS WEEK
The internet is a dumpster fire. So I LOVED this article from The Guardian:
Inconceivable! Rumor of The Princess Bride Remake Sends Fans Into Pit of Despair.
Dear Westley said it best. Nobody can improve my favorite movie of all time. And I mean NOBODY. Any remake can go straight to The Fire Swamp and be devoured by a ROUS!
In case you missed it, Andra started a new fiction series. This post includes both installments. Come back Monday for the next bit.
To see what else Andra has been writing in series fiction, visit The Aftermath of Death, She Was Venus in Fur, Grief Out of Balance, For the Love of a Gun, Death by Toilet, Biscuits, Gardenias and a Funeral and Everything Dies. She’s also on Medium with a new story HERE.

The 1624-mile motorcycle loop was gosh-darned okay. But I feel like I could sleep for a week.
Glad you’re home safe.
Never considered DC a swamp? The description fits very well.
It was an actual swamp in its early days. ?
