Author Lisa A. Kramer flew from Massachusetts to walk part of the Natchez Trace with me. She doesn’t know it, but her visit was a monumental jolt for my writing dream. It isn’t easy to get people to care about words.
Because words are everywhere.
Many words are free.
Her decision to visit convinced me to follow my dream. If I touched one person enough to fly across multiple states to meet me, surely I could convince the masses to read my books, right?
Lisa shares the “masses reading” dream with me, too. Her debut novel “P.O.W.ER” is one of my favorite recent reads. Her story inspires women everywhere to believe in themselves, to champion their gifts, and to stand up to oppression.
When my own confidence drags,
I draw strength from her well of P.O.W.ER.
But Lisa is more than a gifted writer. She’s a college professor, inspiring the next generation to love and appreciate live performance. She has an MFA in theater directing and a PhD in theater for youth, but her passion is theater that builds community. Her heArtful Theatre Company reaches middle Massachusetts to foster community change.
I’m grateful to her husband Nathan and her daughter Sarah for sharing her with me for a few days. In a world where everything is about connection, I feel profoundly disconnected so much of the time. When Lisa reached out to me, she showed me that my words matter. She inspired me to take the author leap. She highlighted my own unique powers.
She helped me believe in my power.
You’re bombarded with requests for your time and money. The internet is nothing but a Scrolling Screed of “Buy My Shit!” Lisa deserves your money, your eyeballs and your recommendations to others. The people in your life need to hear they should read a book about a billion times before they will……….

I’ve seen Lisa around but don’t think I’ve read her work. I will have to check it out. Writers work so hard, and it usually goes unnoticed.
I’m in the mode of “people notice, but most of them don’t care.” Steroid withdrawal/hormones talking. Lawsy mercy, I’m starting to wonder if I’ll ever feel like me again. Staring down the barrel of a month on the road. I’m always excited about the possibilities these trips present, but I sure do wish I felt normal. My skin is thicker when I’m normal.
Glad we finally connected, Helena! Andra is one of the hardest working women I know. She needs to be noticed.

One of my favorite things about writing is connecting people. I want all my friends to be friends, to enjoy each other as much as I enjoy them. I’m so glad you and Lisa connected.

It seems like a few people have wandered over, and maybe a few have at least looked at P.O.W.ER. Time will tel.
People who are helpful and supportive in authentic ways are difficult to find. I’m psyched that you two connected along the way. I love reading about hard work that pays off– and friendships that emerge because of it. Lisa’s book looks delightful. Have added it my queue… which I’ll still be working on when I meet St. Peter!
I’ve given up on a reading queue. I try to read things that 1. connect me with others (as in the online book club in a private Facebook group I’m in); 2. help me understand my own writing/stories/ideas (I’m revising a novel right now, and I’ve got quite a bit of research to do to get one of the voices exactly right); 3. support other talents whose dream is to be widely read. I buy their books, and I try to read and review them as quickly as possible. Because the only way word-of-mouth builds is for people to make time to read stuff early. Given my experience last night (which I’m still crying over), practically everyone in my immediate life has moved on from the “new” of my memoir, mentioned it to whomever they’re going to, and classified it “old news” they no longer need to think about. It really sucks to feel like you’re the only one pushing the snowball uphill, and when you squint into the distance, you still cannot see the top. I’m sure I’m being melodramatic. MTM pushes with me. I can always count on him……and I’m veering into a public rant I posted in a private FB group last night, so I’ll shut up other than to say I don’t want writers I care about to feel that way or have those experiences.
