By the time you read this, I’ll be on the road again. On the way to Florence, South Carolina for a night with my parents, en route to a presentation in Myrtle Beach on Friday. All that means is I’m already missing Montreat.
I miss my culinary failures and the excuse to eat popcorn and cereal every meal.
I miss sitting here.
And looking at this to relieve my eyeballs from the strain of a computer screen.
I miss wondering whether I’m going to ram my car into the side of this gate every time I take a trip to town and back.
I miss getting night crawlers with my milk, because really? Who DOESN’T want night crawlers with their milk???
I miss simple dinners on the porch while I listen to the whistle of a train.
But mostly, I miss sheer creation. A draft is complete, and by the time you read this, I’ll be revising. I promise I’ll bathe and wash my hair, too.
For Father’s Day, we’ve put together a To Live Forever: An Afterlife Journey of Meriwether Lewis giveaway over on Goodreads. If you want a signed copy, head on over there and enter. Five people will win. And, if you’ve been bugging your friends to read it, SHARE THIS GIVEAWAY WITH THEM.

I absolutely cannot wait to read your next book, Andra.
It’s a mess right now, but that’s what rewriting and editing are for.
I shared your contest via FB yesterday. Last night, I had a comment from my friend, Tracy Graudin, who said her husband Steve was sitting beside her reading your book as she typed!
He picked it up last week. Eager to hear what he thinks.
That is fantastic that you got so much done! Amazing what focused quiet time and no distractions can produce! Good luck at your Myrtle Beach event. (The only city I’ve visited in SC!)
That’s about to change! ๐
And thank goodness! I hate that my only point of reference today is smorgasbord all-u-can-eat $5.99 places and trinket shops. ๐
Will call you next week to plan timing that works for us both. ๐
Black Mountain is a beautiful place, wonderfully peaceful. I am sure that the Fiat fit perfectly through that stone gate though. She probably looked very cute within its frame.
I have a bad sense of depth perception, so I thought I was going to hit it every time. Through it for the last time now.
The gates of heaven are somewhere on the grounds of Montreat! I always breathe a huge sigh of peace when I pass through that gate – after I make sure I’m not going to hit it, of course.
It is pretty close to heaven there. I already miss it. It’s raining today, and there’s nothing like being in a cabin in the rain.
Sounds so lovely and peaceful. And um, sure I would take nightcrawlers with my milk. Just not in my milk.
Good job on finishing your draft! That’s huge!
I love funny signs. I even love the little man with the pistol on it.
You are a power house!!!
Just good at vomiting words, Fiona. That’s about what it looks like right now. ๐
Not sure about the milk. I’d just go with the nightcrawlers.
Nightcrawlers have been known to await their demise in the comfort of my fridge next to the milk, thanks to my avid fisherman son. ๐ I can see why you are missing such a peaceful and beautiful retreat. ๐
They do have to be kept refrigerated, right? I think MTM bought some for fishing on another trip to the mountains.
Why did this make me cry? So awesome. You’re doing so well Andra. So dang proud of you.
When a friend and I spent a few days in Asheville, oh so long ago, we went to Black Mountain and talked about how it would be great to retire there. I STILL think North Carolina has lots of places that are very close to heaven….some in the mountains, and some on the coast.
From a realistic standpoint, I’m sure that every place has something special about it (even though some require you to search for it) but any small cabin in the woods speaks to me. Glad yours aided the productivity. Looking forward to the end result.
I would be missing Montreat as well, Andra. Looks quite blissful to me.
Congratulations on completing your draft! I’m sure there is much, much left to do, but, one step out of the way must give you some sense of satisfaction.
It is raining and cold here today, so, I’m holed in my little library/den/office (actually, today it is my retreat) catching up, working on a few projects, etc. but, need a bit of break, so, off I go to Goodreads.
That is amazing, Andra (and beautiful – love the gate). Congratulations on the finished draft.
what a cool place, andra and i am eagerly awaiting your next book )
Your energy and enthusiasm inspire me. Congrats on finishing the next book.
Montreat looks about as perfect a place for writing as one could ever find! I’d be missing it, too. I do hope your time at Myrtle Beach is very successful! You are certainly a writer-on-fire, Andra! Congratulations on the draft. I’m so pleased for youโฆand I’ll definitely be interested in what you’re doing over there on Goodreads! ๐ oxo
Best of luck to you, Andra.
That first picture… looks like a pecan omelet. Wow. I know it’s NOT, but wow. Hmmm. Still, at least you got to eat something. Jack didn’t even get his toast:

How awesome that your great writing memories are associated with such a wonderful place. By the way I once cross stitched that Montreat gate!
