Win a Copy of David Burnsworth’s Southern Heat

In an effort to help unknown writers find audiences, I periodically highlight books I've read and enjoyed. I'm not a book reviewer. I'm more a cheerleader for other writers. When I find one I like, I want them to sell books, find readers and have success. I recently read David Burnsworth's Southern Heat after meeting him at a book signing.

I recently read David Burnsworth’s Southern Heat after meeting him at a book signing. Billed as a rollicking mystery set in Charleston, the book made me hesitate. I don’t like to read books set where I’ve lived for over 23 years, because I get distracted by details. Have I been to that place recently? Oh, THAT’S not what that street looks like! Clearly, this poor writer has never been here.

David’s story hooked me early. I cared about the main character’s predicament, and I enjoyed the reporter clearly patterned after my friend Angie Mizzell. The mystery wasn’t formulaic, and the characters weren’t cliches. Buy David’s book and support a worthy writer.

    1. Our poor English guests. Alan and Margaret came prepared for Southern Heat, and what do they have? Chilly England gray………

  2. i’ll be needing some extra heat this winter.

    1. You certainly will, Beth. Hope it isn’t as bad as last winter, though they’re projecting another cold one, aren’t they?

  3. You know I love new/indie authors and their books. I hadn’t heard of him. I will have to check this out

  4. I’m waiting for the day when some author around here “nails the voice of the new Midwestern noir.” Or maybe I’m just waiting for the day when there is Midwestern noir! 😉

In the meantime I’ll read this book. Sounds like it is one that I’d enjoy. Thanks.

    1. Catchy tag lines and covers are everything in writing. Wish I were better at them.

  5. It sounds good, Andra, and that cover is certainly eye-catching.

  6. Would that more people would practice what they preach. Hope he is successful.

    1. I don’t know how anyone who writes books is successful……..I hope to figure that out someday.

    1. It would make a nice little visit back, Karen. It ranges all over the geography here and isn’t just focused on downtown.

  7. Good for you. Good for him. Good for us all.

  8. A mystery? Well that sounds right up my alley. Think I’ll look for it on my nook… Thanks Andra.

  9. I’m glad you took a chance on this book. I know what you mean about wanting to avoid books set in your town, especially if the books get it wrong. 🙂 Sounds like this one got everything right.

    1. Linda, I usually challenge myself and read books I think I won’t enjoy, but this one was no great stretch. It’s a page-turner.

    1. I keep trying, though my elevator doesn’t go up many floors. Someday.

      1. Even if you are on the 1st floor, you send it to the lower level. 🙂

  10. Small world alert!! I was on a panel with David at Killer Nashville this year. He’s not only a kickass author, but also a really cool human being. I love it when writers run into each other in different settings.

  11. Putting it on my list of books to read.

  12. I usually like reading books set in my area because I can settle in and feel close to the story right away even if some of the details don’t match my personal experiences.

    1. I’m sure my problem is just writerly envy, Lisa. I really struggle with some of our acclaimed area writers. They’re all great people, but the writing isn’t always great. But what do I know, because I certainly struggle to convince people to read me.

  13. Thanks for the suggestion. I’m always on the look out for books about the south.

  14. Read it. Makes me want to visit Charleston.

  15. It sounds like an excellent read Andra and I imagine that David is thankful for your cheerleading efforts.

  16. You are the best cheerleader, Andra, and I am not quite intrigued over Southern Heat.

  17. If it’s set in Charleston shouldn’t it be titled Southern Humidity? 🙂 JUST TEASING!!

  18. Thanks to everyone interested in Southern Heat! I’m working with my publisher on the second in the Heat series titled Burning Heat. Should be out in 2015.

And a special thanks to Andra for this giveaway!
