Dad stayed in the car while I walked across the expanse of grass. Touring graveyards has to be hard. His 60th reunion program indicated that it would be his last.
I am glad I am with him.
Alone, I stood at the foot of the grave of my great grandfather. The man whose scowling photo frightened me as a little girl.
Thomas Jefferson Watkins.
And, I shuddered. It was another sign. To keep trying. Just when I needed it.
It will make sense to everyone someday, but for now, it is enough that I see it.

Destiny does find us.
It doesn’t pay us, though.
Amen.
Even your great grandfather’s name sounds intimidating, Andra!
Hugs,
Kathy
His picture really is one of the most frightening things I’ve ever seen. He looked very mean.
Always keep trying, Andra!
I hope I have it in me, Tom.
My kids go to Churchill Aacademy in Montgomery. The name is a reference to Sir Winston. The school motto is Never Never Never Never Never give up.
I’ve always loved that Churchill quote.
Stay on your trail and don’t give up or turn back. Life us an expedition and you are going far. But Roy still needs to get out of the car! 😉
I don’t feel like I’m going anywhere at the moment, but thank you.
Wherever you get your inspiration, hold onto it, and don’t ever give up. You have so many people pulling for you, you have our energy to keep going!
I don’t understand it at all, but I, too, get strength from being in “contact” with my ancestors. There is a cemetery in Mississippi that holds at least forty of my great-grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins…going back to the Civil War. I’ve been there a few times in my life and I can’t begin to tell you the thoughts that flow through me when I’m there. I think if I can find some of those photos I might share about that sometime. I have such deep southern roots, Andra, you and I might even be related! 🙂 That makes me smile. D
I should’ve gone to visit them last weekend, Debra, when I was in Mississippi. I will probably have to return before I’m done with my story. I hope you will blog about your experiences there. I’d love to hear about it.
I love graveyards (in the daytime). A place of calm, peace, love, and sadness. So much sadness. Sometimes when I visit I feel like I’m in a time machine.
I don’t really even like them in the daytime, but I wanted to make sure I knew where all these markers were. Having Dad take me was the best way.
I am glad that you are there for your dad and WITH your dad as well. I am also glad that you two have a good relationship and that you both can cherish these moments together. Hugs
We’ve really had a ball, James. I wouldn’t have missed it.
One should never be forced to stop having reunions…
